A recent beheading in Pakistan and the statement of an Indian Chief minister on a rape case has led me to write this article to raise awareness among fellow women and people at large.

What happened in Pakistan?

Yes, I am talking about the beheading of Noor Mukadam. What was her fault? You might ask. Well, according to news channels like the Quint, she denied the marriage proposal of Zahir Zakir Jaffer, a 27-year old man, hailing from an affluent Islamabad business family. She was killed brutally on 21st July 2021, and people all over Pakistan are furious. Well, maybe not all, but most of them. If this doesn’t make you gasp or get furious, nothing else would.

Could politicians be any better?

At the same time, there are some high-level intellectual politicians in India, who often give hilarious statements, often related to women. It won’t take you more than a few seconds to just guess their stupidity and the extent to which they possess narrow thinking when it comes to women. Two minors were recently gang-raped at some beach in Goa. To this, the Chief Minister said, “When 14-year-olds stay on the beach the whole night, the parents need to introspect. Just because children don’t listen, we cannot put the responsibility on the government and police.”

This is really nice, blame the victim and end the case. Isn’t it nice, blaming the citizen themselves for roaming the city and then dying in a bomb blast? Tres Bien.

If the leaders are saying stuff like that, I am worried about the future, seriously. This is the 21st century. I have a couple of other controversial statements, but it is better to get straight to the point.

What are the most dangerous countries for women in 2021?

I have compiled this list based on the report released by the World Population Review 2021.

1. South Africa

I didn’t expect South Africa to be at the top, but it is one of the most dangerous countries for Solo Female Travelers. More than 40% of South African women are prone to a rape attempt in their lifetime. Just a quarter of women feel safe walking alone, and the country has the highest rank in intentional women homicide.

2. Brazil

This Latin country has ranked 3rd in the intentional women homicide chart. More than one-third of women have been through physical or sexual violence.

3. Russia

Russia stands as the country with the 2nd highest number of intentional women homicides. It is one of the few countries that have certain laws that limit a woman’s ability to participate equally as a citizen.

4. Mexico

It is the 4th most dangerous country for women and only a third of all women feel safe walking alone. Around 16% of women also experience violence from someone other than an intimate partner.

5. Iran

Iran has a huge gender gap, one of the main reasons why it’s on this list. There are rules that limit women’s rights. It ranks third in the list of countries that legally discriminate against women.

6. The Dominican Republic

DR has one of the lowest rankings when it comes to women who feel safe while walking alone at night. It also has one of the lowest gender equality rates.

7. Egypt

Ranking higher in the gender gap, Egypt is also a dangerous country for female travelers. The country has certain laws too, that limit a woman’s participation as a citizen. When it comes to domestic violence, 39% believe that it is justified under certain circumstances.

8. Morocco

Around 45% of Moroccan women experience domestic violence, which is the highest in this list. It also ranks at the 10th position for laws that discriminate against women.

9. India

Here is my country, the 9th most dangerous. When it comes to domestic violence, more than 45% of women think it is justified under various circumstances. Over the past decades, the rape cases have increased, online assaults(let’s talk about pseudo feminism later), and more. As for me, I have felt safe so far, just because I have been following the rule of not going out at night, especially alone. It is one of the sad truths that I have to accept. A safe haven for women can’t be achieved without a change in mindset.

10. Thailand

The 10th most dangerous country, it’s Thailand. It has the 2nd highest rate of domestic violence. The sad truth is that most women don’t take it as injustice, they accept it as their fate.

Note: The purpose of writing this article is just to educate people and not to bring any country down. I have just pointed out the data and what is still there. It is always better to notice the imperfections rather than ignoring them.
