Childhood Crush

You were different than the rest, I could tell it by the pink-colored bottle you had and the iron man key chain on your bag. You played during the lunch hours and I used to watch you play while eating on the bench.

A FAN OF POKEMON- so I started watching it; remembering all their names just to play it cool when you are around. You were the reason I started playing Bad Minton, and I guess the English teacher knew that I liked you very much.

When the rest of my classmates were trying to please the teachers to become their favorite, there was I, trying helplessly to steal your gaze. I even threw a piece of chalk on you- it fell on your desk and you looked back. I laughed and you got mad.

Oh, what in the earth I wouldn’t do to make you look at me with affection? But we were only kids back then.

WAS IT YOUR NONCHALANCE? Or was it your flamboyance that even my playful and childhood mind couldn’t escape?

You liked the tamarinds the vendor sold outside our school, and one day I summoned some audacity and stole 2 rupees from the temple in my home. I bought it and gave it to your best friend; asked him to give it to you. You did eat it, but you thought coming to me and saying thank you would be too much, or maybe you just forgot. NEVERMIND.

Thanks for being my first crush and reminding me what BUTTERFLIES IN THE STOMACH feel like! The list has grown long now, but the thing I felt for you as a kid was one of my earliest memories and definitely the most serene.
